Bad Links? | Right-of-way now an issue for TDK ExtensionBy JOHN MUNFORD Negotiations have begun on acquiring additional right-of-way for Peachtree Citys portion of a road that would extend TDK Boulevard into Coweta County. The project has been stalled for months after the consulting engineering firm on the project provided a final design for the road with the roads path going right through the runway safety area for Falcon Field Airport, which actually extends off the airports property. Consequently, the Federal Aviation Administration opposed the layout of the road, sending city officials scrambling to fix the design so it would loop around the airports runway safety area. Then city and county officials clashed over which entity would fund the newly required engineering, providing a further delay. A recent infusion of $10,000 from the Peachtree City Airport Authority facilitated the latest round of engineering along with a concession from the engineering firm after city officials countered that the engineering firm was responsible for overlooking the runway safety area. Officials are hopeful that the FAA can fund the remaining land acquisition costs, officials said last week. After the most recent engineering work, the city now has preliminary right-of-way drawings, said City Engineer David Borkowski. The design is not yet finalized, and the right-of-way must still be acquired, Borkowski cautioned, so theres still a good bit of work to do. Months ago, it was thought that land for the new road path would come from Planterra Ridge Golf Club, which would need to relocate part of two golf holes. The golf course is located north of Falcon Field. The extension of TDK Boulevard is hailed by business leaders as necessary to allow employees to get in and out of the citys industrial park, and it will also bring Coweta residents to businesses on the south side of Peachtree City, including the Braelinn Village shopping center. Several council members pointed out at last weeks council meeting that the city is not holding up the project. It is up to the city to provide engineering services and final plans to Fayette County, which will actually construct the road on the Peachtree City side. Clearing has already begun on the Coweta side of the project. |
