Bad Links? | Local teams go four for four in first roundThe state soccer tournaments couldnt have started any better for the four girls soccer teams from Fayette County. All four teams, Fayette County, McIntosh, Starrs Mill and Whitewater, won by shutout, advancing them to the second round of the playoffs in their respective classifications. Starrs Mill blanked the Douglass Lady Astros 15-0 on Wednesday night. Lucy Martin scored four goals for the Lady Panthers, while Gina Goforth added a hat trick and Kelley OHara and Emily Stevens each added two goals. Adding goals in the win were Katie Jacobsen, who also had three assists, Laura McCalla, Beth Meadors and Jamie Daley. Players who had assists were Viktoria Frost with two, Adrienne Phillips, Sarah Burke, Goforth, OHara, Martin, McCalla and Daley. Starrs Mill will take on Windsor Forest on Tuesday night. Windsor Forest (10-5-4) defeated Lowndes 4-3 in the first round of the AAAAA playoffs. Windsor Forest has ended the season with a 7-0-2 run that featured four shutouts. Starrs Mill had five players named to the Region 4-AAAAA all region team, Phillips, as a defender, Goforth and Jacobsen, in midfield, and OHara and Martin as forwards. Fayette County, back in the state playoffs for the first time in several years, won their game against Riverdale 8-0. They will take on Glynn Academy on the road next Tuesday. Glynn Academy (9-4-1) defeated Colquitt County 3-0 in the first round of the playoffs. Eight of their nine wins this season have been shutouts. Fayette Countys goalkeeper Staci Pugh was named to the Region 4-AAAAA all region team. In AAAA action, McIntosh blanked Effingham County 15-0. The Lady Chiefs started the scoring blitz against the Lady Rebels early, notching three goals within the first five minutes of the game. Katie Schulz scored the first one two minutes in and Monica Hogan followed Schulzs goal with one of her own a little over a minute later. Arlan Whittle scored two minutes later but then the Lady Chiefs went into a 17 minute scoring drought. Jesse Lenze broke the drought with a goal off of a deflection and soon afterwards Katie Mosby added a goal of her own after a corner kick. With less than four minutes to go Schulz added her second goal of the half, followed by Hogans second goal and Lenzes second goal to make the game 8-0 at the half. McIntosh will host seventh ranked Eagles Landing next Tuesday at 6 p.m. Eagles Landing (15-1-1) had a 15 game unbeaten streak before falling to Hardaway 1-0 on April 22. Ten of their 15 wins were shutouts this year, though they have yet to face a AAAA ranked opponent. Eagles Landing defeated Thomas County Central 7-0 on Wednesday. Whitewaters game against the Evans Lady Knights was the closest of the four with the only goal coming with less than 30 seconds left in the first half. Brittany Vining scored the winning goal on an assist from Elizabeth McLaughlin. Though they would have several other scoring chances and a flurry of near misses, Whitewater would not score again. A lot of the credit for the Lady Wildcats first state playoff win in school history goes to Jessica Irwin, moving from defense to outside midfield, the teams effort on defense and the stout goaltending from Lisa Wilson. Whitewater will play at Hardaway next Tuesday. Hardaway defeated Bainbridge 15-0 in the first round of the AAAA state playoffs. They are 13-2-0, have won four straight games and have nine shutouts in their 13 wins. For updates on Tuesday nights games, visit www.thecitizennews.com Wednesday morning. |
