Bad Links? | Booth and Rising Starr Headed to NationalsKeeping with tradition, J.C. Booth and Rising Starr Middle will represent Georgia at National Science Olympiad. Three Fayette middle schools, including Booth and Rising Starr, competed at the Georgia Science Olympiad April 16 at Georgia State University. All schools placed in the top 20 with Flat Rock finishing 13th and Booth and Rising Starr taking first and second place, respectively. A total of 27 teams from around the state qualified for the competition, which consisted of 23 different events based on physics, chemistry, geology and a host of other science fields. Events require students to use specific principals, including problem solving skills and technology, to do everything from constructing a bridge to reconstructing a crime scene. Last year Booth finished first at the national competition, bringing their first place wins to eight. This will be Booths 12th trip to nationals. Rising Starr finished 14th last year. The schools team will be looking to earn their second first place finish; Rising Starr won its first-ever first place title in 2002. The school has competed at the national level every year since it opened, making this its eighth national competition. The 2005 National Science Olympiad will be held May 20-21 at the University of Illinois - Champaign-Urbana, in Champaign, IL. The event brings together the top teams from more than 40 separate state competitions. Young scientists from across the nation compete for two days in events similar to those at the state level. |
