Bad Links? | Historic church land now a Best BuyBy JOHN MUNFORD Best Buy is one of three large retail stores planned in an expansion of the Wal-Mart/Home Depot shopping center off Ga. Highway 54 West in Peachtree City . The Best Buy will be just under 30,000 square feet, roughly a third smaller than the sister store at the Fayette Pavilion. Preliminary plans were shown to the Peachtree City Planning Commission Monday night in a workshop session. Several planning commissioners objected to the lack of greenery and landscaping around the Best Buy and the two large retail buildings, which are roughly 20,000 square feet each. Doug McMurrain of RAM Development said that was an oversight and he would honor his commitment to install the landscaping and green features on the exterior of the stores. The cemetery for Line Creek Baptist Church will be between the Best Buy and one of the larger stores. Two smaller buildings of shops, each roughly 7,000 square feet, will be located directly off the highway, according to the plan. The church relocated last year after selling the property to RAM Development. McMurrain said he would consider eliminating a right-in, right-out intersection and shifting one of the smaller buildings to make a green area where some landscaping could be installed for softening purposes. More concern was expressed by the commission about the border of the property along the CSX railroad track. Because of the need for a retaining wall, there is little room for additional landscaping, leaving the view potentially exposed for travelers along Hwy. 54. In addition to being accessed by the intersection of Hwy. 54 and Huddleston Road, the stores could also be reached through an access drive that leads to the south side of the Home Depot building. McMurrain said Best Buy executives were visiting this week to give the site a final approval. The commission will take up the site plan at a future meeting. |
