Bad Links? | FCHS teams come together to take second in the regionBy MICHAEL BOYLAN The Fayette County boys and girls soccer teams lost to Starrs Mill last Friday night. The losses put both the Lady Tigers and Tigers in to second place finishes in region 4-AAAAA, which was good enough to guarantee home games in the opening round of the AAAAA state tournament. The Lady Tigers finished with a 9-6 regular season record and a 5-1 region record. After a shaky 1-3-2 record to start the season, they ran up an 8-3 record. They out scored their opponents 34-10 in that final stretch of 11 games while posting six shutouts. Their opponent next Wednesday when the playoffs begin is the Riverdale Lady Raiders (8-4-1). Riverdale went 3-1-1 in April and out scoring their opponents 13-12 in that span. They finished their season with a 2-2 tie against Mundys Mill. The Lady Tigers beat Mundys Mill earlier in the season 10-0. The boys wrapped up their regular season on Friday with a game at ninth ranked Chattahoochee. The Tigers have an overall record of 5-7-4 and a region record of 4-1-1. The team has been bolstered late in the season by a strong defense but Coach Ben Thacker, who is also at the helm of the girls team, feels that both teams need to find ways to score more consistently if they are to advance deep in the playoffs. The boys opponent next Wednesday will be Stephenson (8-5-2). Stephenson out scored their opponents 54-27. They have had a 6-3-1 record since the beginning of March and have posted four shutouts this season. They closed the season with a 5-1 win over Towers. Making the playoffs this year was a challenge for both teams. The girls had not been in several years and the boys team graduated a lot of talent from last years squad. Through determination and hard work, the teams have fought hard to win a home game in the state playoffs and they are not ready for this season to be over yet. The games will be played back to back at Tiger Stadium next Wednesday at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The girls will play first and the boys game will follow. |
