Bad Links? | Open house April 28 for new Fayetteville PDBy LEE WILLIAMS Local residents will get a chance to stroll through the Fayetteville Police Departments sprawling new facility during an open house April 28. The event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at 760 Jimmy Mayfield Blvd., and all are invited to tour the $4 million facility. The department will officially dedicate its new building during the open house, which will begin with a flag raising ceremony presented by the departments Honor Guard, FPD spokeswoman Lt. Beverly Trainor said. The new 25,000-square-foot facility replaces the old 7,000-square-foot police headquarters located on Johnson Avenue. The new facility also houses the Municipal Court, which was formally held in City Hall council chambers. The department moved into the facility Feb. 10, and officials have spent several weeks working out a few bugs with the computer system and adjusting to the new building. Police and city officials are proud of the building and boast the brick structure will meet the citys needs for the next 30 years. The facility has a larger evidence storage area, training room and records storage area. It also has two temporary holding cells, something the other facility did not have, Fayetteville Police Chief Johnny Roberts said in an earlier interview. The building is expected to alleviate office congestion at the police department, building department, Municipal Court, fire department and City Hall, officials said. The Fayetteville Fire Department will expand and move into a portion of the old police headquarters. The fire department will continue to occupy the other portion of the building. The building department also will occupy the old headquarters. The building also will provide ample parking for citizens on court day. A small parking lot at City Hall made court day a chore. |
