Bad Links? | Chiefs fall to 0-2 vs. Creek, Panthers stay in unbeaten regionBy MICHAEL BOYLAN The McIntosh Chiefs traveled to Tyrone on Wednesday to face their sub-region rivals, the Sandy Creek Patriots. It was the second time these two teams met this season but the result was the same for McIntosh as they lost to Sandy Creek, this time by a score of 5-4. McIntosh jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Tyler Harris drove in Nolan Ivie and Drew Webb with a single. The Chiefs added another run in the third with an RBI double from Sam Hogan but Sandy Creek climbed back in the game at the end of the inning when Brent Brewer drove in two runs with an RBI triple. The Patriots would take the lead at the bottom of the fourth inning. They loaded the bases and Tyler Betsill scored the tying run on a passed ball. Josh Haney scored the go ahead run after an error and Robert Jaracz scored after what can only be called a bunt-fly RBI from Carlos Vasquez. McIntosh would add one run in the top of the fifth after Sandy Creek had two pitches go beyond the catcher in a row. That would be all their runs though as they would only get one more runner on base. McIntosh pitcher Brendan Hall went the entire way, striking out three batters and allowing seven hits. The Chiefs are 3-3 in sub-region play and the Patriots are 4-2. McIntosh will play at Whitewater this afternoon at 4 p.m., while Sandy Creek will take on Woodward Academy on the road. On Monday, the Chiefs will host Woodward Academy for senior night and Sandy Creek will host Northgate. Both games will take place at 5:30 p.m. In other baseball action, Starrs Mill put their second consecutive pounding on a region team by handing Union Grove a 12-2 loss. Andrew Robinson was on the mound for the Panthers, pitching five strong innings and retiring 14 of the last 15 batters he faced. He had seven strike outs and one walk in the win. Union Grove struck early but Starrs Mill got five runs in the bottom of the third inning as Kory Ison, Ryan Lockett, Joey Lewis, Philip Shell and Kyle McCreary each drove in a run. The Panthers tacked on seven more in the fourth with Carter Scurry and Jimmy Tanner scoring on errors and McCreary and Robinson each driving in two RBIs, while Scurry got up again and drove in a run himself. Union Grove made five errors in the game and all five led to runs. We really took advantage of their mistakes today, and thats what good teams have to do, said Coach Brent Moseley. The Panthers are now 13-4 and 7-0 in the region. They will play at Mundys Mill today at 5:30 p.m. and will host Lovejoy on Monday. The struggles continue for Landmark Christian School. They lost their third game in a row on Tuesday, 14-9. They will host Mt. Zion, Carroll at 5 p.m. today. Our Lady of Mercy lost their second game in a row with a 10-0 defeat at the hands of St. Francis. They will host Whitefield Academy at 5 p.m. today. |
