Bad Links? | Area serves up lots of good playThe McIntosh and Starrs Mill tennis teams met yesterday at the Peachtree City Tennis Center after the paper went to press. Recently, Starrs Mills boys and girls blanked Fayette County 5-0. In the boy's matches, Eric Jackson, Evan Foster and Ben Matlaga all won in singles while Keith Kowal, Stefan Maher, Thomas Davisson, and Ahmed Mahama won their doubles matches. In the girl's matches, Gabby Acuna, Jessica Lange and Lindsay Dillon won in singles, while Adriana Acuna, Caroline Smith, Ashley Szczerpaniec, and Haley Staples won in doubles. Gabriela Acuna will be signing a national letter of intent with Georgia College of the South for a full scholarship. The Acuna family was named the Georgia Tennis Association Family of the Year in 2004. The McIntosh boys team is 7-6 on the season while the girls are 6-6. Stefan James leads the boys with a 9-2 record, while sisters freshman kendall Wilde and senior Lauren Wilde are the top two girls players on the squad and also make up the number one double team. After Thursdays match against Starrs Mill, McIntosh heads to play in the Buckhead Rotary tournament this weekend. The lady Chiefs will play in the C division, while the boys will play in the B division. In other tennis news, the Peachtree City Tennis Center has hired two new tennis professionals; Adam Wood and Tom Cobb. Wood, from Yorkshire, England, played at Washburn University in Kansas and also served as their assistant coach for the 2001-2002 season. He was the head Tennis Professional at the Wood Valley Racquet Club in Topeka, KS before coming to Peachtree City. Cobb is a fayette County resident who played four years of college tennis at West Georgia College. In addition to being a community coach for the McIntosh tennis teams in the past, he also won the 2002 USTA Mens 40 National Grass Court Doubles Championship and the 2003 USTA Mens 40 National Clay Court Championship. He is currently ranked number one in the south in mens 40 doubles. The tennis center will have their 10th anniversary bash on Friday, Apr. 22 from 7-9 p.m. Admission is free for members and $5 for non-members. Phone 770-486-9474.
