Bad Links? | Teams play important final gamesBy MICHAEL BOYLAN The players on the local varsity soccer teams are back from spring break and now the playoffs are right around the corner. This week will determine the seedings in either the region tournament or the state tournament. There is no region tournament for region 4-AAAAA and currently Fayette Countys girls team and the Starrs Mills Lady Panthers share the same record (4-0). That wont last too much longer as Fayette County will take on Newnan tonight and Starrs Mill on Friday. Newnans girls have a 3-1 record so if Fayette can earn a win or a tie against the Lady Cougars, they will guarantee themselves a second place finish in region 4-AAAAA heading in to their game against Starrs Mill. The Fayette County boys are behind Starrs Mill (4-0) with a region record of 3-0-1 and games against the Cougars and Panthers this week. Newnan is 2-2 and will close out the season on Apr. 22 with a game against East Coweta. Fayette County hasnt lost since Mar. 8 and a win or a tie against Newnan seals a home game for them in the first round of the state playoffs. There will be region playoffs for the teams in region 4-AAAA and they are scheduled to take place next week. The McIntosh girls are 5-0 in the region after winning their final region game, a match against Woodward Academy Monday, 3-1. They are the top team in AAAA and will host a game next week. They hosted Shiloh last night and will take on Pope on Friday and Summerville, S.C. on Saturday as part of the Lady Cougar Classic. Whitewaters girls should be the other top team from this side of the region. They have a 4-1 record, their only loss coming against McIntosh. They will take on Lassiter and Druid Hills this week. Sandy Creeks girls are 0-2 in the region so far with three region games left to be played. They will play at Northgate tomorrow and will host Woodward on Monday and play at Creekside next Tuesday. On the boys side, McIntosh is 3-0-1 with their tie coming against Whitewater in the Jeff Ford Knockout Classic. McIntosh will take on Woodward tonight and will host a home game in the region tournament next week. Whitewater is done with their region schedule and has a 2-2-1 region record. Sandy Creeks boys are 1-2 so far with two region games left. The Patriots lost to Woodward Academy on Monday 7-1. |
