Bad Links? | Tigers defeat Newnan 14-12 in extra inningsBy MICHAEL BOYLAN Though baseball fans all over the county are looking forward to this afternoons game between Fayette County and Starrs Mill, there was some excellent region baseball being played on Monday as Fayette County outlasted Newnan in nine innings, winning 14-12 thanks to a walk-off three run home run from David Owens. Newnan got the jump on Fayette County pitcher Drew Ward. They got a run in the first, two more in the second and two more in the third. Austin Wilkes replaced Ward in the third inning and got the two outs to end the inning without allowing another run to score. Wilkes allowed a hit in the fourth but kept Newnan off the scoreboard and Fayettes bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning. With two men on and two out, Chase Davis hit an RBI single, followed by a David Owens RBI single, a Dan Cooper RBI double, a single from Brent Moss that drove in two runs and an RBI single from Hunter Rozakos. The Tigers batted around in the fourth and led 6-5 by the end of the inning. Mark Owens drove in a run with a single in the fifth inning to make the score 7-5 and Wilkes would hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to make it 8-5. RiChard Davis followed Wilkes at bat with a two run home run to give the Tigers a 10-5 lead but Newnan would answer in the top of seventh with five runs of their own. Fayette County would not answer in the bottom half of the inning and both teams would not score in the eighth. In the top of the ninth, Newnan would score on an RBI double and a passed ball and would take a 12-10 lead. Davis led off the bottom half of the inning with his second home run of the game. Ricky Williams and Mark Owens each hit a single and after a Davis strikeout, David Owens would hit the blast that kept Fayette County perfect in region play. The win sets up a classic match between the Tigers and Panthers at Starrs Mill today at 5:30 p.m. |
