Bad Links? | Local winners cited in Grandparenting Essay ContestFayette Countys Retired Educators Association recognized the local winners of the 3rd Annual Grandparenting Essay Contest at Brooks Elementary and North Fayette Elementary April 1. FCREA is the local unit of the Georgia Retired Educators Association, which is affiliated with the National Retired Educators Association, a branch of the AARP. This year NRTA teamed with tennis pro Robby Ginepri in sponsoring the Annual Essay Contest. From his tennis pro tour circuit, Ginepri sent the following message: Congratulations to all who participated in this exciting contest! I hope that you grew closer to your grandparent(s) and improved your writing skills at the same time! Ginepri was raised in Georgia in an educator family; his mother is still an active kindergarten teacher in Marietta. Eighty-four fifth-grade students from Brooks Elementary and North Fayette Elementary participated in this years Grandparenting Essay. The theme for this years essay was Stories from My Grandparents Childhood. Each student participating received a certificate while honorable mention and the first-, second-, and third-place winners in each school received a monetary prize along with a pen. We are thrilled at the enthusiasm from students and teachers for the essay contest, said NRTA Director Annette Norsman. We are grateful for Robby Ginepris commitments to the With Our Youth! program. He has helped raise awareness of the tremendous contribution of retired educators to communities across the state. Nationally, through the With Our Youth! program, retired educators have contributed more than 45 million service hours, in over 2,000 communities reaching well over 1.5 million youth. Last year, the GREA won five of the eleven With Our Youth! Exceptional Merit awards in multiple categories. Statewide, GREA reached more than 15,000 youth through community service projects. Locally, FCREA members have volunteered over 3,000 hours to the With Our Youth! program. The essay contest (co-sponsored by GREA and AARP Georgia) was utilized across the state to assist students with writing skills and in some cases, help prepare students for their winter writing tests.
