Bad Links? | Tree smashes golf cartBy LEE WILLIAMS A Peachtree City woman and her 3-year-old son were injured April 2 when a dead tree came crashing down on top of their golf cart while they traveled along the path adjacent to Crosstown Road at Log House Road. Katie Hopkins, 25, and her son, Cameron Cookfair, of Saltlick Trace in Peachtree City, were traveling along the path about 1 p.m. when the tree fell on top of them. It was a big tree, Hopkins said Tuesday still reeling from the accident. It crushed the whole windshield and the roof and the frame. The golf cart belonged to Hopkins grandmother, Elizabeth Johnston. Hopkins was en route to her grandmothers house because she wanted to return the golf cart. The two were going to Chuck E. Cheeses afterwards, but the accident derailed their plans. Units of the Peachtree City Police Department and Peachtree City Fire and Rescue Department responded to the incident. Hopkins and Cameron were taken by ambulance to Piedmont Fayette Hospital for treatment. I had some pains in my leg and my son had scratches and a bump on his head, Hopkins said. Hopkins said she and her son were both frightened by the ordeal. She fears her son might shudder at the thought of getting on a golf cart in the future. The tree fell down on a sunny, yet windy day, but it likely fell down as a result of rain that pummeled the area just days prior. Hopkins said her aunt warned her about falling trees that might topple because of all the rain. Hopkins now wishes she heeded that warning. Hopkins said she believes city officials should work harder to police up dead trees for the safety of others. She is grateful the pair received only a few scatches. But she knows the result could have ended in tragedy. A police officer told us if there was an adult sitting where my son was sitting it would have broken their neck, she said. The golf cart was insured and the repairs for the bodily injuries and property damage likely will be covered. Hopkins said her only problem is she doesnt know where she is going to get the money to pay for their ambulance ride. |
