Bad Links? | Big box coming to FairburnBy BEN NELMS Fairburn city council members unanimously agreed March 28 to approve a rezoning request for 19.87 acres on the northeast corner of Ga. Highway 74 and Milam Road, designed to bring a big box retailer and other retail and commercial businesses to area. The rezoning changes the classification from AG Agricultural to C-2 Commercial. An established one-acre retail parcel situated directly on the northeast corner of the intersection is already zoned C-2. Representing H & W Properties, David Harris told council members the development would be a Class A retail facility. The conceptual site plan showed the property divided into four parcels. The largest parcel, 14.4 acres, is situated along Milam Road. It would contain a proposed 60,000 square-foot big box retail business with approximately 24,300 square feet of other retail spaces attached, he said. The conceptual site plan included parking for more than 500 vehicles. Harris told council members that three additional outparcels, ranging from 1.2 to 1.6 acres in size, were being considered at the site. Two of the outparcels would front Hwy. 74 while the third would be situated to the east, near the retail space adjacent to the big box site. The outparcels might be developed as commercial retail centers or as free-standing commercial facilities such as restaurants, banks or other businesses, depending on market conditions, he said. Also proposed was the establishment of a 10-foot landscape buffer along Milam Road and along the east property line. Harris told council members there was currently no big box retailer to announce. Fairburns Planning Commission recommended approval of the rezoning request at its March 1 meeting. |
