Bad Links? | State legislators to speak to Fayette Democratic WomenState Sen. Valencia Seay and State Rep. Roberta Abdul-Salaam, both of whom represent Fayette County in the Georgia General Assembly, will headline the Fayette Democratic Women's April breakfast meeting Saturday at 9 a.m. at Right on Thyme Restaurant in Fayetteville. Seay is currently serving a second term in the Georgia State Senate. She is secretary of the State Institutions and Property Committee and member of the Public Safety and Homeland Security, Transportation, and Appropriations Committees. Prior to her election as state senator, Seay served one term in the Georgia House of Representatives and several years on the Clayton County board of Education. Seay was appointed to the Georgia School Board Association Federal Relation Network, the Georgia School Board Association Ethics Committee, and as Vice - President Clayton County Board of Education. In addition to serving in the Senate, Seay serves as president/CEO of Seay & Associates. She is retired from a 22-year career in the banking industry. Sen. Seay is also active in the NAACP, National Council of Negro Women, Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, and National Organization for Women Legislators, Women in Government, Women Legislative Caucus, and the Georgia Association for Black Elected Officials. She is a graduate of the Flemming Fellows Leadership Institute, Clayton College and State University, and DeKalb College. When not active in legislative issues and community affairs, Seay spends time with her husband, two children, and one grandson. Abdul-Salaam is serving her first term in the Georgia House of Representatives. She is currently an active member on the Economic Development and Tourism, Judiciary Non-Civil and Transportation Committees. She also serves as Associate Director of the Southern Christian Leadership Foundation and Chair of the political action committee for the Clayton County NAACP. In addition to serving in the Georgia House of Representatives, Abdul-Salaam works as a paralegal with the firm Golden & Associates, and was recently sworn in by Juvenile Judge Steven Teske as a member of the F.A.S.T. Panel of the Clayton County Juvenile Court, which addresses the problem of juvenile delinquency through a program of prevention rather than detention, providing community-building alternatives to troubled youth. Abdul-Salaam is the founder and president of Grassroots Connection, Inc., and has conducted voter empowerment training for numerous organizations. She was the Region One Director of the Georgia Coalition for the Peoples Agendas Voter Empowerment Crusade, which registered over 40,000 voters in 2002, including 2,000 high school seniors in metro Atlanta public schools. Fayette Democratic Women invites all interested women in the south metro area to participate. A continental breakfast will be served for $3 per person beginning at 9 a.m. The meeting will be called to order at 9:20 a.m. The group meets on the second Saturday of every month for breakfast at Right on Thyme.
