Bad Links? | Local lifters do well at the Velocity ChallengeVelocity Sports Performance in Peachtree City recently held a Weightlifting Challenge. The athletes representing Velocity Sports Performance did exceptionally well with several qualifying for national meets. Scores were a combination of the best snatch and clean and jerk lifts. The weights are measured in kilograms, which equal 2.2 pounds. In the boys school age division (16 or younger) Whitewater Middle Schools Mike Melear placed first in the 43 weight class with a score of 72.5, while Richard Myers placed second with a 57.5. Both qualified for the National School Age meet. Austin Faulkner, another student at Whitewater Middle, also qualified for the National School Age meet in the 56 weight class. He placed first with a score of 105. Brian Strickland, another Whitewater Middle School student, placed second with a score of 77.5. In the 85 weight class, Sean Carney, a Booth Middle School student, placed sixth with a 105 point total. In the 94 weight class, Starrs Mill High School student Jeff Messer placed second with a point total of 190, while Whitewater High School student placed third with a 130. In the 105 weight class, Whitewater High School student Mike Suttles placed second with 120 total points. In the junior division, ages 17-20, Velocity members Chandler Alford, a student at Georgia Tech, and Travis Cooper, a student at Sandy Creek, placed first and second. Alford had a point total of 275 points and Cooper had a total of 225 in the 77 weight class. Chase Smith, a Northgate High School student in the 85 weight class, placed second with a point total of 140. In 105+, Northgate High Schools Greg Spencer placed second with 215 total points. Vincent Jones, a student at Sandy Creek, placed fourth with 200 points, while McIntosh High Schools Jeff Betts placed fifth with 152.5 points. In the school age girls competition, Hope Stockel, a student at The Bedford School, took first place in the 39 weight class with 52.5 points. She qualified for the National School Age Meet. Madison Stockel, a student at Woodward Academy, took first place in the 43 weight class with 82.5 total points and qualified for the Junior Nationals and the National School Age meet. Braelinn Elementary Schools Emma Lee won the 48 weight class with 45 points. Her finish was also good enough to qualify for the National School Age meet. Taylor Doster, a Whitewater Middle School student, won the 58 weight class with 85 points. She too qualified for the National School Age meet. In the juniors division, Woodward Academys Lesley Ireland earned a first place finish with 117.5 total points. She qualified for the Junior Nationals and the National School Age meet. Starrs Mill High Schools Brittany Williams had a first place finish in the 75+ weight class with 82.5 total points. While paul Allen, competing in the open class (ages 21+) had a first place finish with 160 points. |
