Bad Links? | Baseball historian to speak at CCSUThe Clayton State History Society may well be singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" Thursday, Mar. 24, when Clayton State Director of University Relations John Shiffert will be speaking to the Society's monthly meeting on "The Origins of Baseball." The meeting, which is free and open to all interested students, faculty, staff and the public, will run from noon until 1 p.m. in room 322 of the University Center. While Shiffert does not claim the distinguished credentials of History Society advisor and Asa Candler biographer Dr. Kathryn Kemp, it is true that his first book, "Baseball: 1862 to 2003," has just been published by Publish America. Something new in baseball books, "Baseball: 1862 to 2003" combines baseballs past with baseballs present, comparing events and players from as far back as 1862 with the events of the 2003 season. Shifferts presentation to the History Society will trace the game back to ancient Egypt and into the 18th Century in both this country and Europe. "I might have a few surprises for people who think they know how baseball came about," said Shiffert. |
