CCSU hosts health fair today

The Southern Crescent’s focus on education turns health education today as Clayton College & State University hosts its annual University Health Fair from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. This year’s event is being held for the first time in the new University Center’s Food Court.

“The health fair will provide health education information and screening to our students, staff, faculty and the entire Clayton State community. The health fair is also part of the Women’s Awareness celebration in conjunction with Women’s History Month,” said Terrilyn Lemons, director of the Clayton State Nurse Manages Clinic and the Health Fair.

The Health Fair is a public event that will have something for everyone, including free health education information from:

• Aids of Atlanta.
• American Cancer Society.
• Clayton State’s Counseling Services.
• Clayton State’s Dental Hygiene Clinic.
• Clayton State’s SmartBodies fitness program.
• Clayton State’s Department of Public Safety.
• The Good Shepherd Clinic.
• Life Link Organ Donation.
• National Mental Health Association of Georgia.
• 1-87 Ride Find.
• The Clayton County Board of Health & Nutrition Services.
• Right from the Start (Peach Care for kids).
• University Rideshare
• Lifestyle Principles (free nachos & cheese and smoothies).
• No Limit Enterprises (free energy drink samples).

Free health screenings will be performed by:

• Kaiser Permanente (body fat and blood pressure).
• The American Diabetes Association (blood sugar check, courtesy of the Nurse Managed Clinic).
• The Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation (sickle cell test).
• The National Aids Education Services (AIDS testing).
• The Clayton Eye Clinic (vision and glaucoma screening).
• Southern Regional Hospital (blood pressure and body fat testing).

Cholesterol screenings will also be provided for a $5 fee by the Nursed Managed Clinic.

The Health Fair will also place special emphasis on women’s health issues, through the following vendors:

• Mary Kay Cosmetics.
• Metro Atlanta recovery.
• Warm Spirit (pampered hands, face care and information on herbal medications).
• Sister’s Love, Inc.
• Planned Parenthood.
• Women’s Health Specialist (osteoporosis screening).
• Women’s Crisis Center.
• Battered Women of Clayton County.
• Aids of Atlanta Women’s Outreach.
• Georgia Department of Community Health, Office of Women’s Health.
• Southern Crescent Sexual Assault Center.

Finally, for all the stressed-out office workers, mini-massages will be provided by Integrated Wellness’ Michael Clark.

The 2005 University Health fair is sponsored by the Nurse Managed Clinic, the Clayton State School of Health Sciences, Women’s Awareness Committee, and the Clayton State Office of Diversity Services.
