Bad Links? | Wildcats get win, Patriots comeback vs. Panthers falls shortBy MICHAEL BOYLAN Friday afternoon, though windy, was a great day for baseball. Friday evening got cold and, depending on what team you favor, was either a great night for the game or terrible. Whitewaters Wildcats shut down the Morrow Mustangs 6-3. Jonathan Ashley took the mound and picked up his second win of the season. His defense, particularly Ryan Johnson and Ryan Gilreath played well by stopping Morrows advancing runners early in the game. Whitewaters biggest offensive highlight came from Justin Carpenter. Carpenter had an inside the park home run and drove in four of the Wildcats six runs. Whitewater played at Dutchtown on Tuesday night. Sandy Creek hosted Starrs Mill, currently ranked fourth in AAAAA in the newest poll from GaSports.com, on Friday and hung tough with the Panthers. Starrs Mill jumped out to a two run lead in the second inning, which featured a leadoff home run from Joey Lewis. The Panthers would pour it on in the fifth inning. Kyle McCreary got things started with a triple as the Panthers would bat around and drive in six runs. Carter Scurry and Jimmy Tanner each drove in two runs and Andrew Robinson drove in another in the inning. Sandy Creek struck back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double from Mark Harris. The score remained 8-1 in the seventh inning when the lights went out. The delay lasted over 20 minutes in the bitter cold but when the lights came back on Sandy Creek got things heated up, scoring five runs in the final inning to put a bit of a scare into the Panthers. Josh Haney hit a homerun in the inning and Tyler Betsill drove in two runs in the rally. The Panthers played at Parkview on Saturday and lost 15-4. They will host Marietta Friday at 7 p.m. Sandy Creek will take on Cairo at Middle Georgia College at 5 p.m. on Friday. Landmark Christian picked up their first two wins of the season over the weekend. They defeated Ridgeland 8-5 on Friday and beat Gordon Lee 8-3 on Saturday. |
