Bad Links? | Scientists bound for state, international competitionSeventeen young scientists are heading to the State Science and Engineering Fair after their experiments took first-place honors at the regional competition while two of them received the grand prize award, automatically advancing them to the international competition. First-place winners are Josh Day, J.C. Booth Middle; Hope Ladewig, Rising Starr Middle; David Fratto and Melanie Fratto, J.C. Booth Middle; Emma Kearney and Will Kearney, Flat Rock Middle; Teddy Abelain and Parker Leinbach, Rising Starr Middle; Steven Beardsell, McIntosh High; Kent Hanie, Starrs Mill High; Andrew Zheng, Starrs Mill High; Mike Martin, Starrs Mill High; Alexa Marcotte, Starrs Mill High and Tarun Aurora and Kanad Khanna, Fayette County High. The grand prize winners are Colin Dean and Trevor Register of Fayette County High. They will represent the school system at the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Ariz., in May where 1,300 students from throughout the United States and 40 countries will compete for prizes and scholarships. Nikolas Bauchat, also from Fayette County High, was selected as an alternate for the international competition. A total of 96 projects representing seven school systems (Butts, Fayette, Griffin-Spalding, Lamar, Newton and Thomaston-Upson Counties) made up the Regional Science and Engineering Fair sponsored by RESA March 3 at the University of Georgia Experimental Station in Griffin. The fair is a competition based on quality of scientific research completed by students. Fifty-seven professionals in the science field judged the projects, with Fayette walking away with five middle and six high school projects advancing to the state competition April 6-9 in Athens. |
