Bad Links? | Patriots even their record with a 15-5 win over LovejoyBy MICHAEL BOYLAN Baseball season is underway and the local teams are playing ball and preparing for what will be tough region schedules. The Sandy Creek Patriots varsity baseball team put a loss to Fayette County last Tuesday out of their minds and picked up a 15-5 win over Lovejoy last Friday. Chad Brooks pitched four innings in the win, while Robert Jaracz pitched the fifth and sixth and Tyler Betsill pitched the seventh. The score was close in the fifth inning until Tim Russell hit a grand slam to give the Patriots a 9-4 lead. Brent Brewer added to the lead with a three run home run in the seventh. Betsill went 2-for-5 at the plate in the win. Coach Eddy Householder was pleased with the improvement of the teams defense and was happy to get the first win of the season. I liked what I saw, said Householder. We hit better, played better defense and cut down on our errors. Sandy Creek was scheduled to take on Mundys Mill yesterday afternoon and will host East Coweta today at 5:30 p.m. Landmark Christian is currently at 0-2. The War Eagles fell to Bremen 8-2 last Thursday and lost to Providence 7-6 in nine innings on Saturday. In the Bremen game, Rome Smith took the mound and went three and a third innings, giving up three hits. The defense struggled behind him. Tommy Kinney played well on offense, hitting a triple, walking twice and scoring a run. Brian Houston also played well. In the Providence game, Kinney was the starting pitcher and was given a 3-0 lead early. Brad Miller came on in relief down by one run and pitched five innings and striking out eight batters. Trey Strickland and Tyler Tidwell both had a couple hits a piece in the loss. Landmark played at Pacelli last night and will play at Ridgeland at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Our Lady of Mercy defeated Galloway 13-3 last Thursday for the schools first Opening Day win in its short history. Junior starter Jarrod Boccella threw a complete game for the win, striking out seven and scattering five hits over five innings. Owen Anderson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, David Bridier was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, Doc Lee had four RBIs, including a bases clearing double in the 10-run fourth inning. Freshman Jacob Bushey scored three runs. The Bobcats played at Bremen yesterday and will host Yeshiva today at 4:30 p.m. In other games, Whitewater got a 6-1 win over Mundys Mill on Friday, while Starrs Mill defeated McIntosh 13-6. The Wildcats were led by Ryan Ashley who went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, including a steal at home plate. Jonathan Ashley picked up the win and Justin Evans got the save. Starrs Mill, ranked eighth in the GaSports.com AAAAA poll, hosted Jonesboro yesterday after the paper went to press and will play at Sandy Creek Friday at 5:30 p.m. before traveling to Parkview on Saturday for a game at 1 p.m. Parkview knocked the Panthers out of the state playoffs last year in the third and deciding game.
