Bad Links? | Cultures of school honored during weeklong celebrationThe different cultures represented at Starrs Mill High were honored during the schools annual Multicultural Week Feb. 14-18. Throughout the week, various student activities and informational displays were featured in the schools rotunda. The week culminated with the third annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian and Multicultural Assembly sponsored by the Student Government Association and the Multicultural Club. Lee Haney, Mr. Olympia for eight consecutive years (1984-1991), addressed the student body as part of the Multicultural Week celebration. Humanitarian Awards were presented to student Phillip Shell and faculty member Barbara Phillips. Shell is described as a leader at Starrs Mill but is best known for his involvement in serving others. He has gone on several outreach trips for the purpose of building houses for those in need and volunteers at area homeless shelters in his spare time. Phillips developed the Health Occupations Program at the school and has been influential in creating Fayettes first Health Occupations Job Shadowing Program. She sponsored fundraisers that bought the first defibrillator for the school. She also coordinates the schools blood drives and the Pennies for Patients campaign, which raises funds to help children with leukemia. |
