Bad Links? | Dollar General on its way to Tyrone at lastBy JOHN THOMPSON Residents traveling Ga. Highway 74 cant help but notice the hustle and bustle of new commercial building in Tyrone. But the highway corridor isnt the only growth area in town. This week, Town Manager Barry Amos confirmed that Dollar General is coming to town. Theyre going to be located on Senoia Road, near Tyrone Tire, Amos said. Nearly a year ago, the retailing giant had approached the town about building a store. After numerous sessions with the Planning Commission, a site plan was finally approved. But then, the town heard nothing. Last week, the town heard from the retailer who asked for a building permit and is now busy clearing the site for construction. I think its going to be one of the prettiest Dollar Generals around. Its all brick, Amos added. According to the companys Web site, the store was founded in Kentucky in 1939 and has grown to more than 7,000 stores. While all the stores merchandise does not sell for $1, the company says at least 33 percent is priced at $1 or less. Amos did not know when the store would open, but did say the towns newest restaurant, Wings N Things, will open Friday. In other Tyrone news, town leaders will gather at the Hampton Inn in Peachtree City Saturday for their annual retreat. The event was supposed to happen in January, but was postponed because of an ice storm. Topics to be discussed at this years session include a smoke-free ordinance for the town, further discussion of the towns sewer capacity and a discussion of future residential development. The retreat begins at 9 a.m. |
