Bad Links? | Golf cart crashes into pond; teen driver uninjuredBy SALLIE SATTERTHWAITE A six-passenger golf cart plunged into the Third Pond at Luther Glass Memorial Park in Peachtree City Saturday when the 16-year-old driver pulled off the cart path to avoid an oncoming cart, lost control and plunged into the murky water. The teen did not appear to be injured, although she did complain of back pain. She jumped to safety, but said she lost her cell phone, PDA and school assignments as the vehicle sank. The Starrs Mill 10th-grader held a wet notebook, and watched as a plastic-sheathed page floated out of reach. One of the seats had floated away and less than a foot of the golf carts top remained above water when Peachtree City police, fire and rescue personnel arrived at 12:21 p.m. Occupants of the second cart told police they were still on the spillway-bridge when the red golf cart slid into the water. Paramedics stabilized the teen for a possible spinal injury and transportation to the hospital. But when her mother arrived, she had her daughter removed from the ambulance. She said the youths father is an emergency room doctor, at present working in Augusta. A light breeze pushed the seat to the center of the pond before changing and returning it, slowly, close to where it had left the cart. A fifth-grader literally fished it from the water. Chandler Hadley, a 10-year-old Braelinn Elementary student, and her sister, Madison, 5, were fishing in the middle pond, while their mothers fiancé, Armando Catter, stood watch. Chandler replaced a fishhook with a weight. When the seat came in range of her precision casting, she sent the weight across it and looped her line on the far side. Tugging gently, she got the seat close enough to pull it up the muddy bank with the help of Madison and Catter. A Newnan wrecker pulled the golf cart out of the water and onto a flatbed. Police said no charges would be filed until their investigation was complete. |
