Bad Links? | Line Creek bridge, RR overpass to clog trafficBy JOHN MUNFORD Construction of the new bridge to span Line Creek, part of the widening project to give Ga. Highway 54 West in Peachtree City four lanes, is already underway. And it could be fairly soon that work will start on the new bridge to span the CSX railroad tracks just west of The Avenue, according to officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation. The project is still on schedule to wrap up by July 31, 2006, said DOT Communications Officer Dorothy Daniel. The bridges, which have been the choke points along with the signalized intersection of Hwy. 54/MacDuff Parkway and the Wal-Mart/Home Depot traffic light, will be completely rebuilt once all is said and done, officials said. The first new bridges will go up and, once operational, traffic will be diverted to the new bridges so the old ones can be removed and rebuilt. Construction will be ongoing at both the Line Creek and the railroad overpass at the same time, officials said. In addition to the bridge work, utility relocation is also underway on the project and has caused no major delays, Daniel said. Recent rains have slowed construction somewhat but have caused no major delays either, she added. DOT officials are urging motorists to use alternate routes during construction as traffic is the biggest challenge faced by the contractor, E.R. Snell, Daniel said. Work zones pose a threat to motorists and to workers within the zone, Daniel said. We encourage everyone to think seriously about finding a less congested route for their daily commute if at all possible. |
