Bad Links? | Promise Place workshop scheduled for SundayPromise Place, the Fayette County Council on Domestic Violence, is hosting a volunteer workshop on Sunday, Mar. 6, at 3 p.m. at Melears Barbecue on Ga. Highway 85 in Fayetteville. Interested volunteers will have an opportunity to meet with executive director Sonja Strickland and hear about the numerous opportunities to help with upcoming fundraisers. A Mystery Theater with coffee and dessert presented by Offshoot Productions Apr. 15-16 at the Roger Spencer Community Center in Tyrone, a 5k Run/Walk from Domestic Violence June 11 and a Black and White Ball to honor Fayette County law enforcement are on the agenda. The goal for 2005 is to raise enough money to break ground on an emergency shelter for the women and children who are victims of domestic abuse in Fayette County. In the effort to get the project started Promise Place is seeking a land donation of three to five acres on which to build. An emergency shelter with offices and ajoining transitional housing is the goal for Fayette County and fundraising efforts are in the beginning stages. The biggest expense initially will be the land and Promise Place is hoping that a concerned citizen or citizens will step forward with a donation to help get the project started. Many other volunteer jobs need to be filled including general clerical work, letter and grant writing, participating in the Teen Dating Violence Prevention program offered in the Fayette County schools and serving on the speakers bureau, helping with the cell phone drive. For more information please call Promise Place at 770-460-1604 or contact Heidi Vaisvil, community outreach director, at 770-846-8659.
