Bad Links? | Fville Council polled on future annexationsBy BEN NELMS Fayetteville Council members weighed in this week on a question posed to them concerning the possibility of an upcoming annexation request by developer Dan Stinchcomb. Council members were asked what their position would be if the council were approached about annexing a 268-acre parcel along Davis Road owned by Stinchcomb. At their Feb. 24 meeting, Fayette County commissioners denied Stinchcombs request to have the parcel rezoned, thus preventing the development of 182 houses on one-acre lots. Annexation would link Stinchcombs 268-acre parcel to a 605-acre parcel also owned by the developer. That property acquired high-density residential (R-40) zoning status in 1980. It permits one house per one-acre lot. Council members were asked for their opinion on a possible annexation request. Though hypothetical since Stinchcomb has made no request, the Fayetteville City Council has been approached in the past by Stinchcomb about annexation issues. Council members gave the following responses to the question. Larry Dell: Right now we are in no way considering annexation. Weve been approached about those (nearly) 900 acres in the past and we sent him to the county, said Dell. There are a lot of issues with that property. Until those issues are addressed and resolved we wouldnt even look at it. Walt White: Im not in favor of it at present. I dont see any benefit to the city, White said. Im not a proponent of high-density development. Glenn Brewer: Were not soliciting annexation, he said. Its considered only by a request being made and whether or not it meets our criteria. Wilson Price: Personally, Im only interested in what benefits the city of Fayetteville in the future. Council member Al Hovey-King and Mayor Kenneth Steele were unavailable for comment as of Monday. |
