Chris Snell, the director of the Fayette County Public Library, has helped contribute to the areas diversity by organizing an evening of music, poetry and art highlighting different cultures known as the Blended Heritage Celebration. Now in its seventh year, the multi-cultural event has become a special night for experiencing the differences that make us unique as people.
This years theme, Bridging the Gap, One Day At a Time, will be held at the Fayette County Public Library, Friday at 7 p.m. in the Dorthea Redwine meeting room.
We dont know our neighbors in the community. This is a great way to get to know each other. Snell said.
Hors doeuvres will be served beginning at 6:30, giving those in attendance a chance to meet before the program starts. Dr. Ferrol Sams will once again participate, sharing works of some of the worlds greatest poets.
We appreciate Dr. Sams lending his voice and his presence to our celebration. Snell said.
Collin Kelley, managing editor of Touch magazine, wrote this years theme poem which he will recite.
Soloist Vernest Bennett, a native of Fayette County will sing a solo of Youll Never Walk Alone as part of the musical celebration. Bennett was an original member of the Atlanta Philharmonic Corral.
From the Dominican Republic, Heriberto J. Payan will play a saxophone solo and accompany young Preston Stephens, a percussionist prodigy from Fayette Christian School. Payan will also perform on flute and clarinet.
Stephens, son of Preston and Cherisse Stephens began exploring his talent at the age of two. He will perform solo as well.
From the Doretta Dance Studio, belly dancers will give the crowd a taste of the east with their colorful costumes.
Local artist Marteka Sudek from the Czech Republic will have some of her work on display. Sudek is responsible for the childrens department mural depicting the four elements, air, fire, earth and water.
