Bad Links? | Sandy Creeks boys and girls advance to sweet sixteenBy MICHAEL BOYLAN And then there were two. Fayette County had five teams in the state basketball playoffs, three girls teams and two boys teams. Starrs Mills girls and Fayette County boys and girls lost in their AAAAA games, while Sandy Creeks boys and girls moved on in the AAAA playoffs. The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots (25-3) took on Statesboro at home on Friday and won 64-39. The girls jumped out to a 15-0 lead, pushed it to a 31-12 lead at the half and were able to maintain a lot of that distance for the rest of the game. Mary Fields scored 17 points for Sandy Creek and added three steals and four assits, while Jenna Jackson scored 14 points and Morganne Campbell added 12. Lindsey Paschal had a good all around game with six points, seven steals and seven rebounds. Our defensive pressure really started us off on the right foot, said Coach Jim Waller, who added that his team has accomplished all of the goals they set for themselves so far. The girls will now meet Northside, Warner Robins on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Columbus Civic Center. If they win, they will take on the winner of Jones County and Warner Robins at 7 p.m. on Saturday. That game will also take place at the Civic Center. The boys will also be playing in Columbus this week. They defeated Statesboro on the road 66-56. The Patriots (24-4) got 24 points from Aaron Caruthers, who led all scorers. Sandy Creek was able to set the pace of the game and contain the athleticism of the Blue Devil players. The Patriots will face Bainbridge on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and will meet the winner of Northside-Warner Robins and Baldwin at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday if they win. To get to the Columbus Civic Center, take I-85 South to I-185 South to exit #1 Victory Drive. Turn right at end of ramp. Continue on Victory Drive. Columbus Civic Center is on the left at the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Victory Drive. In AAAAA action, Fayette Countys girls fell to Riverdale 59-44. The lady Raiders went up early on the Lady Tigers, leading at one point 20-3. Fayette County battled back with a terrific second quarter but Riverdale took over in the second half and maintained a sizable lead. Leading Fayette County in scoring was Kristin Bunch with 13 points, Kristene Walker added 12 points. Starrs Mills Lady Panthers hosted the Morrow Lady Mustangs and lost 60-42. Starrs Mill fell behind 11-0 early and though they played fairly evenly with the lady Mustangs the rest of the way the damage was done. Shannon Dougherty led Starrs Mill with 10 points, while Katie Jacobsen and Ashley Zilles each scored seven points and Aneesha Lane added six. It was our first time going to the state tournament and it gives us something to build on, said Coach Whitt Jones. The team will graduate two players, leading scorer Angela Garza and leading defender Lane. Fayette Countys boys hosted the Douglass Astros on Saturday and lost 61-51. The Tigers had a horrible first half, scoring only 15 points. Though they closed the gap with better play in the second half, they could not surpass Douglass.
