Bad Links? | Tyrone welcomes Sonic, Waffle HouseBy JOHN THOMPSON For years, Tyrone residents moaned about the lack of dining options in their quaint burg tucked into the northwest corner of the county. But after last Thursdays Town Council meeting, the towns dining choices increased by two. The council unanimously gave approval for a Waffle House and a Sonic Drive-In to locate in the town. Two months ago, it didnt look like either restaurant would locate in the town. But after repeated discussion over site plans, the council finally gave its blessings to the two eateries. Council members were thrilled the two restaurants were so accommodating in working with the councils vision for development in Tyrone. This sets a precedent for future people who want to develop in this town, said Councilman Paul Letourneau. Waffle House officials brought back a design reminiscent of a Colorado Waffle House that provides a lodge feel and dropped one sign they wanted displayed near Ga. Highway 74. This will be the most unique Waffle House in the area, said Town Manager Barry Amos. Sonic officials agreed to backlight the restaurants signature canopy and increased the landscaping on the site. Sonic also agreed to eliminate several parking spaces. Theyre using architectural features to dress it up, Amos added. While the restaurants passed with virtually no debate, Advance Auto parts had a more difficult time getting their site plan past the council. The auto-parts giant wants to locate behind the CVS store on Hwy. 74. But the council turned down their request because 11 parking spaces were encroaching into the 60-foot landscape buffer. But after huddling and discussing their options, Advance officials agreed to eliminate the parking spaces. The measure then passed the council by a unanimous vote. |
