Why dont we just give it to Ray right now? This seems to be his big year. He won best album at the Grammy's Sunday night. Even Norah Jones is riding his coat tails these days. The film based on his life is getting a lot of attention and nominations from the Academy and critics. The sad thing is that Rays not here to enjoy it. I guess Jamie Foxx will have to do.
Last year it was Lord of the Rings. Once again, the man of the hour, J.R.R. Tolkien couldnt make it. Peter Jackson stood in for him taking home the best director and best picture awards for his little film. I didnt see it. I loved the books, but Fellowship bored me and I couldnt get through even half of The Two Towers. I guess I just couldnt warm up to any of the portrayals. They all came off like archetypes. I prefer edgier characters.
Charlise Theron won for Monster last year. That was a performance worthy of its prize. This year, Im rooting for Hilary Swank in the best actress category. Everyone seems to think Annette Bening will win for Being Julia. I confess. I didnt see it. Who can afford to see all these movies besides the actors who nominate them? There arent enough matinees in the day!
A quick rundown of actresses who I feel deserved better in the past would include: Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge, a film that got snubbed for all the wrong reasons; Ellen Burstyn in Requiem For A Dream who lost to Julia Roberts for Erin Brockovich are they even in the same universe?;and Diane Keaton for Marvin's Room. Frances McDormand won for Fargo, doing an odd turn as a female officer of the law.I guess quirky was in that year.
Jamie Foxx has the best odds at this years Oscar night. Hes nominated for best actor and best supporting actor. Who is he all of a sudden, Laurence-freekin-Olivier? Yeah, he was believable as Ray Charles, but then again, who doesnt have a good Ray Charles impression? As for his nomination in Collateral, I dont exactly remember walking away from that movie thinking, Foxx blew me away with that spot-on cabbie in deep doo doo performance. I was more impressed with Cruises performance, even though he was written off by most people for playing a bad guy. I never thought I would be saying this (OK writing this) but Tom Cruise is one hell of an actor! He deserved a nomination this year.
So who got the shaft in the past, besides Richard Roundtree? How about Willem Dafoe as Max Shreck in Shadow of the Vampire? He lost to Benicio Del Toro for Traffic, another film whose high praise I still dont quite get. It was OK.
How about Billy Bob Thornton in A Simple Plan, another overlooked film? I thought he was absolutely terrific in a script with some meat to it. He lost to James Coburn for Affliction, a film I havent seen as yet, have you? I think it was another one of those We should have given you an Oscar years ago, but we messed up awards.
The biggest question of the year seems to be Will Martin Scorsese get his gold statue this time, or what? Personally I wouldnt want to be Clint Eastwood this year. I would feel really bad. Sure, Million Dollar Baby basically blows Aviator out of the water, but Scorsese is not gonna be around forever. Weve already blown it with Hitchcock and Welles.
Consider this. Scorseses 1990 film, Goodfellas, probably the best film ever made about the mob lost to Dances With Wolves. Kevin Coster, the great American auteur walked away with best picture and best director! I couldnt sit through fifteen minutes of that ego-trip. Personally I think Costner is almost as overrated as Ron Howard. Is that possible?
Some other films that didnt get nominated for best picture and deserved to are 1999s Magnolia. Hello! Earth to people with some modicum of taste!
Another Scorsese classic, Casino, is my personal favorite film of the great New York Director, and its about Vegas! Sorry, too heavy. Next!
One of my fave Coen Brother films, Barton Fink sank like a heavy gold statue in a Hollywood swimming pool. It should have gotten something, best wallpaper?
Forrest Gump? How about giving it to Pulp Fiction or Ed Wood or The Madness of King George or even The Lion King? I actually saw and loved those films. They were nominated in 1994 along with Gump-head. Maybe its just me, but Tom Hanks used to be a good actor. Now hes like the Bono of Hollywood. My theory is that all those millions of dollars go straight to their big fat heads!
OK, I have to stop now. Im getting to worked up! Im using way too many exclaimation points! I have to relax! Its only a stupid award show, right? It doesnt really matter in the grand scheme of things, right? You cant get into Heaven just because you have an Oscar, right?
Of course not! It would fall right through one of those puffy white clouds and conk some idiot down on earth right on the head. Like Mel Gibson.
