Bad Links? | Panthers and Chiefs set records at county championshipsStarrs Mill went on to win their fifth consecutive county title last week by just over 30 points over McIntosh, while Fayette County finished third. The Starrs Mill men and women combined to win 10 out of 22 events and set five county records. Senior Noah Copeland broke the 100 freestyle record that had stood since 1996 (46.97), and his own record in the 200 freestyle set last year (1:43.15). Also setting records for Starrs Mill, sophomore Lauren Cartwright in the 500 freestyle (5:16.75), the 400 freestyle relay of Cartwright, freshman Julie Glass, junior Georgia Highsmith, and freshman Sarah Larson, and the 200 freestyle relay of Larson, Glass, sophomore Bailey Garrot and junior Mackenzie Garrot. Others with a top three finish for Starrs Mill were Cartwright in the 200 individual medley (first), Mackenzie Garrot 100 breast (first), Highsmith 100 back (first), 200 individual medley (second), Glass 200 freestyle (first state qualifier), Larson, 50 and 100 freestyle (second), Heather Highsmith, 200 and 500 freestyle (second), sophomore Kristin Schroder, 100 back (second), and the 200 Medley team of Highsmith, Bailey Garrot, Mackenzie Garrot, and Cartwright (first). On the mens side, senior Kris Pretzer finished second in the freestyle (state qualifier and third in the 100 breast, while senior Andrew Morton, 100 Freestyle (third), freshman Matt Boyle, 500 Freestyle (third), the 200 Medley Relay team of Copeland, Pretzer, junior Scott Adams and freshman Austin Ellyson placed second. The 200 free relay team of Pretzer, Copeland, senior Robert Hawkins and junior Danny Clasen took second) and the 400 free relay team of Adams, Boyle, Clasen and junior Cullen Lorensen placed third. McIntosh High School swimmers shattered a string of county records last Tuesday in the annual county meet. The Boys relay teams set new records as they swept three events, Nicole Roddenberry set a new county record for the girls 50-freestyle (25.64), and Vince Tortora blasted past the old 500-freestyle record (4:42.40). McIntosh boys took first with 352 points, firmly ahead of Starrs Mill High School boys with 290. Starrs Mill girls put their team into first place overall by scoring 377 points to McIntoshs 282. Thomas Lucak, Jeb Beard, Bryan Mitchell and Chris Lee beat a 2004 McIntosh county record in the boys 200-medley relay (1:44.69), while Tortora, Ricki Otaki, Kyle Miller and Andrew Morton beat a 1996 McIntosh county record in the boys 200-freestyle relay (1:34.07). Lucak, Tortora, Miller and Lee wrapped up a resounding record performance in the boys 400-freestyle relay, again surpassing a 2004 McIntosh county record. Lucak had a pair of second-place finishes in boys 200-freestyle (1:52.62) and boys 100-butterfly (55.03), beating his own 2004 county record, but trailing behind Zach Payne of Sandy Creek High School (54.18). Miller placed first in boys 50-freestyle (21.83) and second in the boys 500-freestyle (5:22.05) behind teammate Tortora, while Tortora added a second in boys 100-backstroke (56.62). Lee captured second in boys 100-breastroke (1:03.43) behind teammate Mitchell. Mitchell also took second in boys 200-individual medley (2:08.31).The Chiefs also claimed second in the boys 400-freestyle relay (3:48.53) with Morton, Otaki, Beard and Matt Manley. The McIntosh girls were led by the speed of Roddenberry, who also captured first in girls 100-butterfly (1:00.06). Roddenberry, Rose Tortora, Keaton Hannon and Bailey Ambercrombie took second in girls 400-freestyle relay. Qualifiers moving on to state competition from McIntosh include: Lucak, Beard, Mitchell, Lee, Tortora, Miller, Otaki, and Morton for the boys, and Roddenberry, Hannon, Kristin Bradley and Hannah Williams for the girls.
