Bad Links? | Speeding, drug charges in Tyrone for Fairburn manBy LEE WILLIAMS A Fairburn man will answer charges of speeding and felony drug possession after a run-in with a Tyrone police officer Monday on Ga. Highway 74 and Tyrone Road. Victor Manuel Hernandez, 35, of 8225 Spencer Road, faces charges of speeding, reckless driving, driving on a suspended or revoked license, failure to maintain a lane and possession of crystal meth following the incident. A Tyrone police officer allegedly spotted Hernandez about 3 a.m. Monday traveling at a high rate of speed and driving erratically while he was monitoring the flow of traffic at Tyrone Road and Hwy. 74. The officer was seated inside of his patrol car while parked on top of the Senoia Road bridge on Hwy. 74 when he observed Hernandez traveling in a 1996 white Dodge Ram pick-up truck, authorities said. The pick-up in question approached the intersection of Tyrone Road and made an abrupt right turn onto Tyrone Road and then made another abrupt left turn back onto Hwy. 74 and continued south on Hwy. 74 at a high rate of speed. The officer clocked Hernandez traveling 98 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone, police said. Hernandez allegedly crossed the centerline and made wide turns crossing into the opposite direction of travel several times, police said. The officer caught up with Hernandez just south of Crestwood Road. He initiated a traffic stop on Dogwood Trail at Meadowood Lane. The officer asked Hernandez for his drivers license. Hernandez allegedly told police his license was suspended, and he was placed under arrest. The officer searched Hernandezs vehicle while waiting for a wrecker to impound the truck. During the search, the officer allegedly found three cigarettes inside of an opened Marlboro cigarette pack and a bag of crystal meth. I advised Mr. Hernandez of his Miranda rights and asked the subject if the cigarette pack was his, police said. He stated that the cigarettes were his but not the contents, and he refused to answer any more questions. Hernandez was taken to the TPD for processing and later taken to the Fayette County Jail. He was released Tuesday after posting a $5,040 bond. |
