Bad Links? | School board delays opening middle schoolBy JOHN THOMPSON Parents who had hoped their children would be going to school in less-crowded middle schools will have to wait at least one more year. The Coweta County Board of Education decided Tuesday night to delay the opening of Lee Middle School until the start of the 2006 school year. School officials had hoped to open the new school next to Willis Road Elementary this August, but admitted their projections were too optimistic. Ten months is just not enough time to complete a school, said Superintendent of Education Blake Bass. The board learned Tuesday the school would not be completed until Thanksgiving and was given the choice of delaying the opening or moving students into the school in January, 2006. My recommendation would be to wait, so we can hire a principal and staff and have everything in place, Bass said. Board member Mike Sumner agreed. It would create too much confusion if we did it mid-year, Sumner said. While board member Brian Roy agreed with much of the assessment, he assured the board that many parents would not be happy. My phone has been ringing off the hook with parents from Arnall Middle School and East Coweta Middle School who were hoping the school would open this year, he said. |
