Bad Links? | Local teams begin play in region basketball tournamentsLadies first. The girls will kick off action in the region basketball tournaments today and the games start early. In the 4-AAAA tournament, McIntosh's Lady Chiefs will play Lithia Springs at 4 p.m. with Whitewater taking on Villa Rica at 8:30 p.m. Sandy Creek is off until Wednesday evening. They will play the winner of the Lithia Springs/McIntosh game at 7 p.m. All games will be played at Lithia Springs High School. In the 4-AAAAA tournament, which is being held at Mundy's Mill High School, Fayette County's Lady Tigers will take on Union Grove at 4:30 p.m. and Starr's Mill will face Lovejoy at 6 p.m. The boys games begin on Tuesday. In the 4-AAAA tournament, McIntosh takes on Alexander at 5:30 p.m., while Whitewater will meet Lithia Springs at 8:30 p.m. Sandy Creek's boys will face the winner of Villa Rica and Northgate at 7 p.m. on Thursday. In the 4-AAAAA tournament, Fayette County will take on Lovejoy and Starr's Mill will face Newnan. Starr’s Mill’s girls advance, McIntosh and Whitewater loseThe Starr's Mill Lady Panthers outlasted Lovejoy 61-57 on Monday. The win advances them to the AAAAA state tournament as they are guaranteed to finish as one of the top four teams in the region. Their next game will be Wednesday evening. In the region 4-AAAA tournament, the McIntosh Lady Chiefs were defeated by Lithia Springs, 44-34 and Whitewater's girls lost to Villa Rica 65-45. The losses ended the season for the two teams. Today's region 4-AAAAA tournament action features the Starr's Mill boys against Newnan at 4:30 p.m., followed by Fayette County against Lovejoy at 6 p.m. Both games will be played at Mundy's Mill High School. The region 4-AAAA tournament is being held at Lithia Springs High School and will feature McIntosh against Alexander at 5:30 p.m. and Whitewater against sixth ranked Lithia Springs at 8:30 p.m. There will be more tournament updates tomorrow. Fayette boys survive, Chiefs, Panthers and Wildcats knocked outIt's one loss and you're done come tournament time and three local boys basketball teams learned that on Tuesday, none harder than Starr's Mill which led Newnan for most of the game. The Cougars pulled ahead of Starr's Mill with a little over four minutes remaining and held on during a furious charge in the final minute from the Panthers. The final score was 53-46. Fayette County's boys led for most of their game against Lovejoy and were able to overcome a poor fourth quarter to hang on for the 52-50 win. The victory advances the Tigers to a Thursday night game against East Coweta and also puts them into the state tournament. McIntosh and Whitewater played in the region 4-AAAA tournament at Lithia Springs on Tuesday and both lost. The Chiefs fell to Alexander 65-51 and the Wildcats lost to Lithia Springs, 90-57. Tonight's tournament action will feature Starr's Mill's girls against Mundy's Mill at 6 p.m. and Fayette County's girls against Newnan at 7:30 p.m. Sandy Creek's girls open their region 4-AAAA tournament play tonight at Lithia Springs with a 7 p.m. game against Lithia Springs. Lady Panthers and Lady Tigers to meet for region championshipWednesday night's region 4-AAAAA tournament action saw Starr's Mill's girls defeat Mundy's Mill 42-39 and Fayette County's girls upset Newnan 44-38. The wins guarantee both teams one of the top two spots in the region and also guarantee home games in the first round of the state tournament. Emily Woodward led Starr's Mill with 10 points, while Kristin Bunch scored 19 for Fayette County. They will face off tomorrow night (Friday, Feb. 11) at 7 p.m. Sandy Creek's girls got a 67-44 win over Lithia Springs on Wednesday night. Mary Fields led the team with 20 points. The win qualifies them for the state tournament. They will face Douglas County tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the region 4-AAAA semi-finals at Lithia Springs High School.
