Number of area grapplers heading to state meet

High schools in Fayette County will send a number of wrestlers to the AAAA and AAAAA state championships this weekend.

In the region 4-AAAA tournament, Sandy Creek placed fourth, McIntosh placed fifth and Whitewater placed ninth. The Patriots qualified six wrestlers and two alternates for the state meet in Rome, while the Chiefs qualified six wrestlers and an alternate and the Wildcats qualified three wrestlers.

The local grapplers who will be competing this weekend in Rome are: Richard Hughes (103), McIntosh, 4th place; Norm Brooks (112), McIntosh, third place; Jake Huddleston (119), Whitewater, fourth place; Jordan Strain (135), Whitewater, first place; Alex Willis-Cruz (140), Sandy Creek, first place; Davarion Smith (140), McIntosh, third place; Blake Morgan (152), Sandy Creek, second; Jake Griffin (152), Whitewater, third; Travis Cooper (160), Sandy Creek, second; 171 - - , Sandy Creek, third; Scott Ritter (171), McIntosh, fourth; Adam Byrd (189), Sandy Creek, first; Carroll, McIntosh, fourth; Derek Scarbrough (215), Sandy Creek, fourth and Adam Dale (275), McIntosh, fourth.

Alternates were Sandy Creek’s Drew Gunnin (130) and Frank Brand (145) and McIntosh’s Matt Penn (135).

In the 4-AAAAA tournament, Starr’s Mill and Fayette County enjoyed a lot of success, qualifying wrestlers in every weight class but one. The Panthers missed out on 171, while Fayette County missed qualifying at 145. Wrestlers who qualified for the state meet will wrestle this weekend in Macon. Overall, Starr’s Mill fiished second to Union Grove and Fayette County placed third.
