Bad Links? | Season ends and region tournaments beginBy MICHAEL BOYLAN The regular season is now over and everybody enters the region tournament at 0-0. It makes no difference if you have 18 wins or four. The rules of the tournament are simple; win and you move on or lose and start thinking about next year. The local teams wrapped up their regular season last weekend, hoping to gain a little momentum before tournament play. Sandy Creeks boys and girls took on Creekside and both got wins to remain undefeated in region play during the regular season. The boys won 59-35, while the Lady Patriots won 61-38. As the top seed from their sub-region, both teams earned a first round bye in tournament play. The girls will open the tournament tonight against Lithia Springs at 7 p.m. and the boys will play the winner of Tuesday nights Villa Rica and Northgate game on Thursday at 7 p.m. The region 4-AAAA tournament is being held at Lithia Springs High School. In other region 4-AAAA play over the weekend, Northgate played a spolier to both McIntosh and Whitewater. McIntoshs Lady Chiefs fell 50-39 to the Lady Vikings, while the boys lost 58-55. Whitewaters boys lost a close one to the Vikings as well, 58-53 and the Lady Wildcats lost 58-48. The region 4-AAAA tournament began on Monday night for the girls basketball teams and both McIntosh and Whitewater found themselves on the losing end of the scores. The Lady Chiefs took on Lithia Springs and lost 44-34, while the Lady Wildcats met Villa Rica and lost 65-45. The losses marked the end of the season for the two young teams. In region 4-AAAAA play over the weekend, Fayette Countys boys picked up two wins; a 70-62 win over Lovejoy and a 64-61 win over Starrs Mill, while the girls split. The Lady Tigers lost to Lovejoy 49-46 and then beat Starrs Mill 40-35. Starrs Mills boys and girls split their Friday night games in Newnan with the boys winning 62-61 in overtime and the girls losing 42-26. The region 4-AAAAA tournament began Monday night at Mundys Mill and both the Fayette County and Starrs Mill girls teams were winners, advancing them in the region tournament and giving both teams a berth in the AAAAA state tournament. Fayette County beat Union Grove 44-30 and Starrs Mill defeated Lovejoy 61-57. It is the first time that the Starrs Mill girls have made the state basketball tournament. Starrs Mill will take on Mundys Mill at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Fayette County will face Newnan afterwards. The boys opened their tournament last night after the paper went to press with Starrs Mill taking on Newnan at 4:30 p.m. and Fayette County facing Lovejoy at 6 p.m. |
