Bad Links? | Drivers license address change proves popularIt's only been available since Nov. 15, but over 14,955 Georgians have initiated a driver's license address change online without having to visit a driver's license facility. This new initiative from the Department of Motor Vehicle Safety saves many Georgians that have moved valuable time, and it will also help ensure that they receive a Driver's License Automated Renewal Application when their license is up for renewal. Receipt of this Application can prevent another trip to a driver's license Customer Service Center, if the recipient chooses to renew their license or identification card online, by mail or telephone. "The principal mission of the DMVS is to provide the best possible customer service to all Georgia's citizens. We are committed to creating shorter lines, quicker transactions and customer friendly service," said James R. Davis, DMVS Commissioner. To qualify for the free online address change request, applicants must have notified the United States Postal Service of their address change within the last 13 months. Candidates must hold a non-commercial license in good standing and have more than six months left before the license expiration date. A replacement license will be mailed to the new address within 30 days of the date the address is changed. The corrected license will be valid for the remainder of the current renewal period. If you have already received a free license this renewal cycle, you are not eligible for the online procedure. Your social security number must be provided and verified with the Social Security Administration. Other information from your driver's license must be provided. Initiating the online address change should have a positive impact on those who can participate in the Driver's License Automated Renewal Program. A critical factor in the success of this program is the ability of the DMVS to mail the Renewal Application to the correct address. Georgia State Law requires that drivers correct any change of address within 60 days of moving. Many residents do not complete an address change, and the Renewal Applications are returned to the DMVS. Allowing an online change of address will increase the number of citizens eligible to receive the Automated Renewal Application and renew without visiting a driver's license facility.
