Bad Links? | S. Creek students getting TV exposureBy MICHAEL BOYLAN Next time youre watching something on TBS, you may see a Sandy Creek student telling you about an American who has influenced history. Seniors Brandon Lawrence and Edward Mitchell were among the 23 students chosen out of the 400 who made audition tapes for this special ongoing program. The guidance counselors at Sandy Creek chose 15 students to make a tape and submit them and Lawrence and Mitchell were the only students from Fayette County selected for the project, titled Great American Moments. Lawrence and Mitchell each recorded a 30-second spot on a famous American who has had an impact on American history. Lawrences spot is on Blanche Kelso Bruce and Mitchells spot is on Patricia Roberts Harris. Kelso Bruce escaped from slavery in Mississippi and was an activist for both African-Americans and Native Americans. Roberts Harris was appointed to the National Womens Council for Civil Rights and was also a member of President Jimmy Carters Cabinet. The spots will run through December at various times on TBS and can now be seen at www.tbs17.com. The young men thought the entire experience was both fun and interesting. They filmed the spots at the TBS studios, went through make-up and read from a tele-prompter while standing in front of a green screen. Both gave the director a lot of credit for putting them at ease during the project. It was neat to see the finished product, said Mitchell, who has always had an interest in filmmaking. It was a good learning experience. The students were chosen by their counselors to enter the project because of their good presence and their scholastic achievements. Lawrence is the editor-in-chief for the school newspaper and Mitchell is the papers news editor. Mitchell is also president of the Student Senate, president of the Key Club and a member of the Young Democrats and the Spanish club. Lawrence is a member of the varsity football team, a member of the Young Democrats and a member of the National Math Honor Society. While taping the spot is a great boost for their already-full resumes, the school has received $250 for their students involvement in the project. Both students have yet to decide on which school to attend in the fall. Mitchell is deciding between Morehouse and Georgetown, while Lawrence has narrowed his choices down to the Universty of Georgia, Morehouse, Howard, Hampton and Georgia State University. Lawrence plans on majoring in business, while Mitchell plans on majoring in political science or international affairs. Keep your eye out for these two impressive young men and their television spots this year.
