St. Gabriels announces plans for Ash WednesdayMembers of the Catholic Church of St. Gabriel will observe the beginning of the Lenten season with a communion service and three Masses on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 9. The distribution of ashes will take place at a communion service for early risers at 6:30 a.m. and during each celebration of the Mass that day, at 8:30 a.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The priest or deacon places ashes on the forehead of those wishing to be marked as a remembrance of the Christian belief that they will one day return to dust. All services will take place in the parish worship area at 152 Antioch Road. The Lenten observances will also include the Stations of the Cross each Friday beginning at 7 p.m. The Stations of the Cross is a devotion that goes a long way back in Christian tradition, a church spokesperson explained. Once the Emperor Constantine in 313 signed a decree, which allowed the freedom to worship in the Roman Empire, Christians have wished to walk where Christ walked on Friday of His Passion. While many have achieved this over the centuries the majority of Christians have been unable to walk this journey. Sometime during the 17th century, the church began erecting stations depicting various aspects of Christs journey. These stations ranged at intervals around the walls of the churches and took the form of wooden crosses with the event of the passion placed underneath to fix the incident in mind. In the early days of the church the number of stations varied but was set at 14 by Pope Clement XII in 1731. While most churches, like the Catholic Church of St. Gabriel, still journey with 14 stations, some churches have added a 15th to commemorate the resurrection. A regular weekend Mass schedule will take place during the entire Lenten season. This includes a Vigil Mass Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m., Sunday morning Masses at 8 and 10:30 a.m. and a Sunday evening Life Teen Mass at 5 p.m. The Catholic Church of St. Gabriel is at 152 Antioch Road, just south of the Georgia 92 South intersection.
