Local Black History program for children features studies in culture, contributionsFayette and Clayton County area children in grades one through five are invited to three months of discovery at Outreach International Center, 1091 S. Jeff Davis Drive, Fayetteville, as they learn of contributions and customs of black Americans. Ann Nunan, former Fayette science teacher, and Pam West will be the program facilitators. In conjunction with Black History Month, the children will focus on the exciting discoveries of George Washington Carver, especially his work with the lowly peanut, Nunan said. To develop an appreciation for other great African-Americans who were also Christians, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., children will culminate Februarys focus with a visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Atlanta. This approach to childrens program is non-traditional, but certainly attracts the eye of the child and thats what are trying to do, said Dr. John Hatcher, church pastor. During March children will learn the distinctives of Christian music, including southern gospel, classical, and the black church tradition. As part of this module, Pam West will prepare children to sing on Easter Sunday. Rather than having an Easter egg hunt, children will participate in the churchs Easter Parade and receive a sack full of Easter goodies. Marchs music focus will culminate in a visit to Georgias Music Hall of Fame in Macon. There, children will learn of Georgias music heritage including the gospel contribution of Dr. Thomas Dorsey who wrote Precious Lord, Take My Hand. April will allow children to participate in a detective mystery that draws together Bible study and hands-on investigative science labs, including fingerprinting, chromatography, mystery powders, and other activities. During May children will make Mothers day gifts for their own mothers and for residents of a local assisted living facility. All children in the community are invited to participate.
