Fayette Dem. Women aid victims of tsunami

The Fayette Democratic Women held a fundraising drive at their January meeting to benefit survivors of the tsunami in Southeast Asia.

Through their efforts they were able to provide 75 sleeping mats to survivors. Donations were given to the American Red Cross.

“Democratic politics may be our interest, but we realize we are citizens of a much larger world community,” said Karen L. Kilgo, vice president of Fayette Democratic Women and spokeswoman for the tsunami relief drive.

“Currently, so many people abroad are hurting and in need. In situations like this, politics must take a backseat to helping others. Most of us live a very comfortable life in Fayette County, so this is the least we can do right now. We are just trying to do our part to make the world a better place for those who were the hardest hit by the disaster. I just wish we could do more.”

Kilgo summed up by adding, “It’s all about loving your neighbor as yourself. These people are our ‘neighbors’ and they are in need of our love and help.”

The Fayette Democratic Women will continue to accept donations for tsunami relief at their next scheduled meeting Saturday, Feb. 12.

The Fayette Democratic Women meet the second Saturday of every month for breakfast at Right on Thyme restaurant, 174 N. Glynn Street (Ga. Highway 85) in Fayetteville.
