Starrs Mill swimmers victorious in tri-meetHost Starrs Mill finished first in its meet against Salem and Sandy Creek Jan. 22 at Washington Park. The men won five out of 11 events with junior Scott Adams and freshman Matt Boyle winning two events each. Senior Kris Pretzer won the 50 freestyle and placed second to Adams in the 100 freestyle. The team consistently placed in the top five with junior Danny Clasen finishing fourth in both the 50 freestyle and the 100 breast. His brother, freshman Drew Clasen, finished third in the 200 individual medley and the 100 back. Rounding out the top five finishes are senior Bradley Morris, fifth in the 200 freestyle, senior Robert Hawkins, fifth in the 50 freestyle, John Manching, second in the 100 breast and freshman Austin Ellyson, fifth in the same event. The Starrs Mill women dominated the field with wins in 10 out of 11 events. Double winners include freshman Bailey Garrot, 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle, junior Georgia Highsmith, 200 individual medley and 100 back and Lauren Cartwright, 200 freestyle and 100 breast, both in state qualifying times. Also finishing in the top five were freshman Sarah Larson, first in the 50 freestyle and third in the 200 freestyle, freshman Julie Glass, second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 breast, senior Heather Highsmith, fourth in the 200 freestyle and second in the 500 freestyle, freshman Jalee Walters, fifth in the 50 freestyle and second in the 100 breast, sophomore Kristin Schroder, second in the 50 freestyle and second in the 100 back, Kelly Adams, fifth in the 100 back, senior Nikki Roth, fifth in the 100 freestyle and freshman Megan Copeland, third in the 100 butterfly. McIntoshs boys and girls swim team put up a number of good finsihes at the Clarke-Oconee Swimming and Diving Invitational last weekend. First place finishes for the boys went to the 200 medley relay team and 400 freestyle relay team of Vincent Tortora, Thomas Lucak, Chris Lee and Kyle Miller (1:42.57) and Tortora in the 200 freestyle (1:46.42) and the 500 freestyle (4:47.79). Other top 10 finishes for the boys were from Miller and Lucak, placing second and third in the 200 freestyle (1:52.11 and 1:52.31); Miller, third in the 500 freestyle (5:12.87); Matt Manley, 12th in the 200 individual medley (2:28.06); Ricki Otaki, ninth in the 50 freestyle (24.24); Lucak and Beard, second and ninth in the 100 butterfly (55.77 and 101.94) and Lee second in the 100 freestyle (49.31) and third in the 100 breast (1:05.18). The 400 freestyle relay team of Andy Rapson, Matt Manley, Otaki and Beard placed fifth (3:49.82), while the team of Cason, Manley, Otaki and Bryan Mitchell placed ninth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.89). Top 10 finishes for the McIntosh girls were from Nicole Roddenberry, second in the 100 butterfly ( (1:00.88) and the 100 back (1:05.10); Keaton Hannon, sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:23.88) and the 100 freestyle (57.79); and Rose Tortora, seventh in the 500 freestyle (5;53.70) and ninth in the 200 freestyle (2:16.20). The 400 freestyle relay team of Hannon, Tortora, Roddenberry and Lindsey Lochridge, placed second (4:03.57). Next up for the Panthers is the County Championships tomorrow at the Washington Park Pool.
