Fayette County high school students can now take courses over the Internet through a collaboration with Clayton County schools, and at a discount price.
Recently, the Board of Education approved the arrangement for Clayton County to provide the needed technology support for the courses, the same ones that Fayette purchases from Class.com, an approved vendor of the Georgia Department of Education. But the cost to take the e-courses will be just $175 per course, down from the original $295.
Courses offered at the reduced rate include Algebra IA, IB, IIA, IIB, Geometry IA and IB, Pre-Calculus IA and IB, American Literature IA and IB, World Civilizations IA and IB, United States History IA and IB, American Government and Psychology.
Fayette also has access to a variety of other courses from Class.com, Brigham Young University and other providers, which meet both Georgia and local school board curriculum requirements, said Melinda Berry-Dreisbach, spokeswoman for Fayette County Schools.
The program would also be available to non-traditional and home-school students, including those who live outside the county. The course study is fully accredited and meets state standards, Riddle said, and will be adjusted to match the Georgia curriculum overhaul being led by Superintendent Kathy Cox.
Students can access the electronic courses at home or at their high schools in a computer lab during a non-class period. Exams are given at the Evening High School, and students must provide their own transportation.
The current policy will allow high school students to attempt one e-course per semester, for a total of eight classes for the four years of high school.
Each students principal and counselor must approve exceptions to the policy.
Parents and students should contact the counseling department at their schools for more information.
