Board says drugs not a major problemBy JOHN THOMPSON The Coweta County Board of Education got a wake-up call about drug use in its schools during a January school board meeting. An East Coweta High School student said that he was a regular witness to drug sales and drug use at the sprawling campus and asked the board to look into the problem. During its retreat last week, the Board of Education asked some of the school systems staff for input on the issue. Its not a Clayton County atmosphere, said former East Coweta High School principal Eddie Lovett. Lovett, who now works as a student services coordinator, said his solution would be to have two student resource officers at each high school. These schools are now approaching 2,000 students, he said. Board member Mike Sumner agreed the idea had merit, but ultimately it would depend upon funding. Student services coordinator John Boren also told the board that drug use was not rampant on the high school campuses. Weve had only four cases of marijuana use this year, he said. There have been no reported cases of methamphetamine use this year, which Boren said was astounding, considering the number of meth lab busts that take place each year. Another possible solution for putting a crimp in the drug use at schools is random searches, but some board members are no sure those should be used. Those can prove really disruptive to classrooms, said board member Brian Roy. Board members agreed to keep monitoring the situation and examine all possible solutions before implementing another policy. |
