Whitewater progressing in the poolThe Whitewater High School boys swimming team tied for second with Upson-Lee while the girls finished in sixth place in the Panthers Invitational Meet in Houston County last weekend. Whitewaters team , comprised of freshment and sophomores, is evolving into a force to be reckoned with and coaches Mike Donaldson and Amy hammock are very pleased with the progress the team is making. In its second year, the team will send at least one swimmer to the state swim meet in Februrary. David Menchinger has qualified in the 500 free (5:01.92), the 100 back (56.90), and the 200 individual medley (2:08.34). Menchinger had a state meet qualifying time in the 100 butterfly in the Panthers Invitational, finsihing first with a time of 57.92. Jared Toro and Cassandra Heimann are on the verge of qualifying in the 50 free and the 100 breast. Key Lady Wildcat performances from over the weekend were swum by Leslie Binfield, third in the 100 back and seventh in the 50 free; Catherine Groover, 10th in the 100 fly and Megan Bidelman, 11th in the 100 fly. The girls 200 free and medley relay teams both finished in fifth place. Finishing strong for the boys were Menchinger, who took first in the 100 back and 100 fly, and Toro, who finished third in the 50 free and 100 breast. Matt Schreiner captured a fifth place finish in the 100 breast and placed eighth in the 200 individual medley. Matt Rose, Todd Dearing and Chad Lawrence all swam respectably to help the Wildcats with top 15 swims. The boys 200 medley relay team finished in third place while the 200 free relay team placed fifth and the 400 free relay team placed seventh. We are very encouraged with our progress as a growing team. Both Amy and I are enjoying this seasons successes and look forward to even greater ones to follow, said Donaldson. These really are a great group of athletes. Whitewater will swim against all of the other county swim teams in the Fayette County swimming championships this Saturday at the Washington Park Aquatic Center in Atlanta at 10 a.m. To get to the aquatic center, take I-85 North to I-285 West. Take Exit 10 A to I-20 East into Atlanta. Take Exit 53, the MLK Jr. Dr exit and turn left on to MLK Jr. Dr. SW then turn left on to Ollie St.
