Whitewater seeking region winsBy MICHAEL BOYLAN There are precious few games left for our local high school basketball teams to alter their seedings in the upcoming region tournament. Nearly every game counts now and an extra region win could mean avoiding a certain team in the first round and maybe going a little deeper in the tournament. Whitewaters boys lost to McIntosh last Friday night 97-81. McIntosh completed their season sweep of the Wildcats thanks to 53 points from Dwayne Irvin, which set a new school record for points in a game. Whitewater trailed by 17 points at the half but cut the lead to two points heading into the fourth quarter. Jay Bright led Whitewater with 26 points, while Stephen Sargent added 14 points and 14 rebounds, Ricky Sinkfield added 11 points and Trey Scales contributed nine points. On Saturday, Whitewater (8-11) picked up a non-region overtime win over Dutchtown, 65-61. Coach Brent Jackson was pleased that a lot of different players contributed to the win. Zach Scurry was the Wildcats leading scorer with 14 points, while Sargent netted his second triple-double of the season with 11 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocks. Bright added 13 points, two of which came as clutch free throws down the stretch and Scales scored 11 points, had four steals and hit three huge free throws in overtime. Whitewaters girls lost to McIntosh 50-35. The Lady Wildcats only trailed McIntosh by two points at the half but height played a huge factor in the second half and McIntosh pulled away for the win. Tina Ross had 16 points and seven rebounds for McIntosh, while Erin Justice added 12 points. Whitewater played at Sandy Creek last night and will play at Northgate on Friday and at Haralson County on Saturday. McIntosh got swept by Lithia Springs on Saturday. The boys lost 84-57 and the girls lost 48-42. Justice had 14 points for the Lady Chiefs. McIntosh will play at Creekside Friday before hosting Starrs Mill in their new gym on Saturday. Sandy Creek faced Northgate last Friday and both the boys and girls picked up another region win to stay unbeaten in region play. The boys won 69-23 with Aaron Caruthers scoring 18 points, while the Lady Patriots (17-3) won 54-20 with Tracey Paschal scoring 13 points and adding six rebounds and five steals and Olympia Haney and Mary Fields adding 10 points a piece. Sandy Creek will be on the road this weekend with games against Woodward Academy and Lithia Springs on Friday and Saturday respectively. The Sandy Creek boys are currently ranked sixth in the GaSports.com AAAA boys basketball poll and Lithia Springs is ranked fourth. In other games played over the weekend, Starrs Mill split with East Coweta. The boys lost 63-52. They had cut the Indians lead to five points with just under five minutes to go but East Coweta hit a number of free throws at the end to widen their margin. Vinnie LeDonne led the Panthers with 22 points. The Lady Panthers won their game 29-25. Leading 27-25 in the waning moments of the game, Angela Garza hit the final basket for Starrs Mill to give them a four point lead and the win. Garza led the Lady Panthers with eight points. Starrs Mill played at Fayette County last night and will host Lovejoy on Saturday before playing at McIntosh on Saturday. Fayette County got swept by Mundys Mill on Friday. The Lady Tigers lost 47-39, while the boys lost another heartbreaker 77-76. The boys trailed by 24 points with two minutes to go in the first half and were able to tie it up with just over five minutes to go in the game. It appeared that the two teams were headed for another overtime game when the officials called a foul with a second remaining. The Mundys Mill player hit one of the shots and they escaped with a win. Fayette County had numerous players step up in the game including Jordan Windisch who hit a number of big threes down the stretch and Stephan Pleasant as he continued to drive the lane and get to the basket. It was a team effort though to overcome the deficit and fans can be sure that Mundys Mill wants no part of Fayette County in the region tournament, fearing that a third time may be a charm for their opponents. Fayette County will be on the road for the rest of the year with games at East Coweta, Lovejoy and Starrs Mill.
