24 area Einsteins advance to next round of science fair

Psychological responses to color and color memory, the solar disinfectant of water and the effects of classical music on plants are examples of the experiments conducted by Fayette students for the 2005 Science and Engineering Fair held recently.

Middle and high schoolers from across the county submitted projects, and 24 were awarded first place prizes. Those winners will now advance to the Griffin Regional Science and Engineering Fair at the University of Georgia Experiment Station in Griffin March 3.

Students entered projects individually or as teams. Middle school winners advancing to the regional fair are:

• J.C. Booth: Josh Day, Shelby Bachman, Parker Bachman, Minna Choi, Martine Vanvoorthuysen, Lisa Bianco, David Fratto, Melanie Fratto.

• Flat Rock: Kyle Bobbitt, Emma Kearney, Will Kearney.

• Rising Starr: Matthew Waples, Hope Ladewig, Vaughn Gaddis, Parker Leinbach, Ted Abelein, Jacob Demmitt, J.T. Shellnutt and Rayan O’Shaughnessy.

High school first-place winners are:

• Fayette County: Nick Bauchat, Brain Warr, Kanad Khanna, Tarun Aurora, Chase Davis, Ben Gore, Colin Dean, Trevor Register.

• McIntosh: Steven Beardsell.

• Sandy Creek: Angela Reames.

• Starr’s Mill: Kent Hanie, Michael Martin, Alexa Marcotte and Andrew Zheng.

RSMS wins top prize in CNN contest

Channel 17 Action News, the morning news and announcements show at Rising Starr Middle School, recently won the grand prize in the CNN Studio Tour School News Video Contest.

The winning video was a student production on CNN’s contributions to the international community. The contest was open to junior high, middle and high school groups in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Florida.

Students will be treated to a tour of CNN and have a question and answer session with one of the cable network’s top news anchors. Rising Starr’s morning news broadcast team is under the direction of Media Specialist Christopher Harper.

Tips for disabled headed for college

A free workshop for students with disabilities who plan to go on to college after high school will be held in the media center of Fayette County High School on Feb. 7 from 7-9 p.m.

Participants will learn about postsecondary options, the college/university application process and criteria/support for accommodations.

A copy of “Georgia Transition Directory: Postsecondary Options” will be available for each participant. Parents and students with disabilities in grades 9-12 are invited to attend.

Scbolastic Book Fair coming to Oak Grove

Students at Oak Grove Elementary in Peachtree City are getting ready to “Read a Great Tale” during the Scholastic Book Fair scheduled for next week, Jan. 31 through Feb. 4.

The fair will take place during regular school hours and offer books available at prices below retail. Posters and other education related items will also be available for purchase.

To encourage students to participate in the book fair, the school is having a mask decorating contest for the theme, “Read a Great Tale.” The mask must be that of an animal with a tail.

The book fair theme will be carried over to Parent Night on Feb. 3 from 6-7:30 p.m., when students will be able to participate in the “Guess the Number of Tails” in a fish bowl to win a prize.

WHS staff, varsity basketball teams to face off

The Whitewater High faculty and staff will take on the school’s varsity basketball boys and girls teams Feb. 2 in a showdown to raise money for leukemia and lymphoma.

As if the games will not be entertaining enough, the faculty and staff have also put together their own cheerleaders and dance team to perform at half time.

Tipoff at the Whitewater Gym is at 6 p.m. for the boys and 7 p.m. Cost of admission is $3 per person with all proceeds going directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Pennies for Patients campaign.

Cleveland students design winning Web site

Cleveland Elementary enrichment students are the first place winners in the April 2004 Oracle ThinkQuest Website Competition.

Enrichment teacher April DeGennaro and technology specialist Catherine Douthard served as coaches and guided the students to use original student artwork and written information that reflected their expertise but retained the voice of the students.

Feedback from the international panel of professional educators cited these features, along with the technical design and effective use of multimedia, as the reason for the win. The website, entitled Crocodilians, was inspired by the schools mascot, Curious the Crocodile.

Winning Web sites will be published in the ThinkQuest Library, a rich educational resource visited by millions. Cleveland’s winning Web site can be viewed online at www.thinkquest.org.
