The Fayette-Coweta Electric Membership Corporation is about to lose one of its charter employees: Jackie Pope.
She began in July, 1973, when the Fayette County office was in the Aberdeen Center in Peachtree City. It is now located on Ga. Highway 54 halfway between Peachtree City and Fayetteville. Originally there was only one EMC employee in the county.
She was born and reared in Clayton County and was introduced to her husband, Fayette County native Donald Pope, by mutual friends. They married in 1960 and have one son, two daughters, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. They are active members in the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, where she sings in the choir.
Jackie likes to spend her free time reading and shopping, and vacation time might be spent on cruising to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. She also is one of the charter volunteers at the Piedmont Fayette Community Hospital.
When asked for a funny telephone call, she said the late Stan Neely called just a few months after she started working at EMC and told her he needed electricity at a field right away, as he had a truckload of birds on the way. Jackie promptly put through the order so those poor birds wouldnt die. What Neely confessed to her later was the fact that they were clay pigeons.
I dont want her to retire, said district office manager Stanley Sitzer. She has always been a super service representative; I just dont want her to leave.
Ive always been happy on my job, Jackie said. Some longtime customers have heard that Im leaving and have called. I have made a lot of friends on this job, and they have always been a joy to be around.
