Wal-Mart 2004 giving tops $30K

The Peachtree City Wal-Mart gave over $30,000 in matching, bonus and other grants in 2004. Recipients of these grants include Peachtree City and Tyrone public schools, civic support groups, public recreation and parks, the Fayette County Animal Shelter, Wal-Mart appointed Teacher of the Year programs, literacy and environmental programs, Grandparents Day at a local nursing home and the Fayette County Safe Kids Coalition. Contributions were also raised with the help of Wal-Mart associates for the Children’s Miracle Network. The Good Works program focuses on what Wal-Mart customers and associates believe are the most important issues in the local community to determine how the Wal-Mart Foundations dollars are spent.

“Our Peachtree City Wal-Mart associates were thrilled to partner with these organizations to raise funds for a worthwhile cause,” said store manager Charles Hedden. “The money has been utilized for programs in the community and we are glad to support these organizations. This is just a small part of Wal-Mart’s ongoing committment to the communities in which we operate.”

On Wednesday, checks were presented to both Miguel Abi-Hassan of the Fayette County Animal Shelter and M.T. Allen of the Peachtree City library. The shelter will put their money towards educational programs and safety tools for their officers.

“The safety tools will improve the quality of servide the staff provides as well as the handling of the animals,” said Abi-Hassan. He plans on launching the edcational programs in the spring. Programs that will be offered will include bite safety, basic pet care and pet first aid.

The library will be able to use their money in the course of relocating back to the expanded and renovated library in the fall.
