The Fayette Middle School 7th and 8th grade Symphonic Band, under the direction of Ricky Williams, is performing for the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) In-Service Conference on Thursday, January 27 in Savannah, Georgia. Our performance will feature Kenny Beard and Mike Maxwell as guest soloists and Ed Davis the president of GMEA, as guest conductor. This invitation to perform for our states music educators is the highest statewide honor bestowed upon a school band program. The Fayette Middle School Symphonic Band is one of only two middle school bands selected to perform at this prestigious gathering of Georgias music teachers. Bands wishing to perform must submit a recording and supporting paperwork outlining the past accomplishments of the band program.
The Fayette Middle School band program has a rich tradition of excellence. The band has received superior ratings in festivals held in Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and Florida. In addition to our Savannah trip, the Symphonic and Concert Bands will travel to Williamsburg, Virginia to compete in the national FiestaVal Music Festival and Competition in the spring. Last year, the FMS Band was crowned Grand Champion in the FiestaVal held in Lakeland, Florida.
In addition to full band honors, individuals within the group also excel. The FMS Band had forty-four students chosen for the District Six Honor and Clinic Bands for 2004-05. Twenty-six students also passed the first round of All-State auditions and will compete at the state level on January 15 in Perry, Georgia.
